Barley Splatt Wood is very ancient woodland full of Beech trees that at some point have been regularly coppiced, this has resulted in the trees becoming spread, deformed and twisted - wonderful subjects for drawing. This is one of a series of drawings I made of the trees in that wood. (Annie Ovenden)

One of the original seven Ruralists, Annie Ovenden was born in Amersham, Buckinghamshire and studied at the High Wycombe School of Art from 1961-5. She married Graham Ovenden in 1969 and moved to Mount, near Bodmin in Cornwall in 1973.
