By birth Preziosi was a member of the wealthy aristocratic Catholic families of Malta. Amadeo, 5th Count Preziosi, later espoused the cosmopolitan environment of Constantinople, which at this time was still the capital of the Ottoman Empire. A resident in the city for nearly fifty years, Preziosi familiarised himself with almost every aspect of the city's characteristics.
