Mauve was a dutch painter and etcher who lived most of his time in The Hague, Holland. He was born in Zaandam, Holland and educated by Van Os. In 1878 he moved to Laren, which is the Dutch Barbizon. When he met Van Gogh in 1881, he discussed with him his passion for Millet who he admired. He exhibited in all big cities in Europe and America and got numerous medals, especially in Vienna, Paris, Berlin and Philadelphia. In England he had exhibitions at the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Art, at the Manchester City Art Gallery and at the Royal Scottish Academy.
