Maurice Levis was a pupil of Harpignies, Jules Levebre and Billet. He mainly worked in Paris and joined the Artistes Francais in 1888. By 1895 he was made a honourable member. In later years he won two important prizes; a third class medal in 1896 and a gold medal in 1927, which gained him fame and recognition amongst the French public.
