This is the prime version of this composition. Two other versions, probably studio works, of the same composition are known, one formerly with Lepke, Berlin, Sale March 11, 1913, lot 93 (F & R 1978, No. 223A, dated 1530) and one in the Hage Collection at Nivaagard, Denmark (cat. 1908 and 1922, No 16) (F & R, 1978, No 223B, dated 1535). Several pentimenti are visible throughout the painting, the most notable being the changes in position of the left-hand fingers of the child embracing the mother.
