Edward Munch visited Paris for the first time in 1883, staying there three weeks. Between 1889 and 1893, he lived in the city. It is not beyond the bounds of reason that he saw this remarkable stone, lying on the beach in Brittany. He painted his seminal and haunting evocation of pain, The Scream, in 1893.
