Description / Expertise
In contrast to the turmoil of his own inner life and the noise and disturbance which surrounded him, Dadd’s finest pictures from Bethlem are often suffused with an elegiac calm. This desolate scene is emotionally more convincing than many of the more violent subjects which he drew.
