Maningrida Arts and Crafts

Description / Expertise

This painting is about a site known generally as Gugatjirri. The area where the fish trap has been put in place is known as Ngalgamba or Marrmarra.

The Manjabu or fish trap is made from local vine, Milil (Malaysia scandens). Inside several species of fish have been trapped, and these include: Marrngnun or Djalumbu - Catfish; Galerr - Long Tom Fish; Dawunburr, and Ngarrtbil.

Also used in conjunction with Manjabu is Wallabi, a knotted string net used to pick up small fish.
