Sybil Andrews was born in Bury St Edmunds in 1898. She studied art during the First World War and in 1922 she left for London and enrolled at the Heatherley School of Art. Two years later she was studying at Claude Flight's Grosvenor School. Sybil Andrews was, with her partner Cyril Power, the finest image maker in the group of artists influenced and taught by Claude Flight, the inventor of the lino-cut technique.

Golgotha was printed in 1931, and is one of the first images that Sybil Andrews created on a religious theme. Later, she produced a set of The Stations of the Cross. Two editions of Golgotha were made, the first was printed for the English market in 1931 in an edition of 60. The second edition was made for an American market in 1936; only ten were printed.

Sybil Andrews remembered her times at the Grosvenor School:

'There was good work in those days- a fight against prejudice. We were the Avant-Garde... It was there (Grosvenor School of Art) that I met Claude Flight, who was giving classes in colour lino-cut. When I was at Heatherley's, William Kermode had given a lecture and demonstration of wood block printing. This was in black and white so I had already been thinking and working in terms of blocks when I met Flight and I immediately saw that his method was what I wanted for my ideas. The colour lino-cut was just the medium for me, being interested in dynamics and ideas and patterns... It is impossible to be fussy with lines, you have to simplify, you are forced to simplify your idea to its fundamentals.'(1)
