Description / Expertise

This is a pastel drawing for one of the frescoes in Manchester Town Hall. Madox Brown and Frederic Shields received the joint commission for these mural decorations in 1878. Mainly due to Shield’s influence, the project was finally given entirely to Brown, and was his last important work. The project was for twelve wall paintings, illustrating events in the history of Manchester. Chetham’s Life Dream, c. AD 1640 was the eighth panel. The final scheme by Maddox Brown remains in Manchester Town Hall to this day.
