Description / Expertise

The Beguiling of Merlin (1872-77), The Wheel of Fortune (c 1882), The Rock of Doom (1885-8, one of the Perseus series), and The Depths of the Sea (1886) are among the works which were photographed by the Berlin Photographic Company at the end of the twentieth century. The negatives from these exceptionally high quality photographs were then exposed onto a gelatin covered copper plate, etched with acid and printed in a similar fashion to an engraving. Each folio was sold with notes in a limited edition of 200. They were all signed by Philip Burne-Jones, the artist's son. Burne-Jones's work was often appreciated more abroad, particularly on the Continent, than at home; it became widely known there both through exhibition and reproduction. King Cophetua and the Beggar Maid (1884), for example, was particularly admired when it was shown at the Paris Exhibition Universelle in 1889 and resulted in Burne-Jones being awarded the Cross of the Legion of Honour.
